The vision of free public outdoor wireless internet (WiFi) connectivity in Savannah was a challenge undertaken by 14 students in the 2002-2004 class of Leadership Savannah who were tasked to establish a project that could have a positive impact on the quality of life in Savannah, Georgia.
The team's project was named Savannah Spanish
Moss and incorporated in the state of Georgia
as a domestic nonprofit organization. The founding
members of Savannah Spanish Moss are: David
Capallo, Mark Dana, Todd Freesman, Eric Fulcher,
Stephen H. Hooten, Cleveland Latimore, Zena
McClain-Haymon, James A. Manley III, Marc Marling,
Hope Moorer, Diana Morrison, Allynne Tosca Owens,
Tanya Scott-Pilcher and Melissa Yao.
Savannah Spanish Moss - Its Name
The name of the nonprofit, Savannah Spanish
Moss, was inspired by the hanging plant known
as Spanish Moss that graces beautiful landscapes
throughout Savannah,. In WiFi technology, the
term "cloud" refers to an area of
coverage hanging overhead, as Spanish Moss hangs
over the region. Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides)
is an air-feeding plant or epiphyte found mainly
upon cypress, gum, oaks, elms and pecan trees.
Not unlike wireless access, epiphytes have no
roots and thus it was the perfect name for the
project.
Public Service - Its Mission
Our mission was to implement a WiFi network
in selected areas of Savannah's Historic Landmark
District in order to demonstrate the community's
commitment to technology and showcase the technology
base that exists in the Savannah area. The network
was to be free and public, with its primary
target audience visitors to the area.
